Choosing your survival backpack

Selecting the right survival backpack is just as important as the rest of your gear; carrying your carefully assembled bug out bag contents in a cheap backpack will only leave you frustrated when it falls apart in no time. Keep the following tips in mind when selecting your bug out bag.

Material
Ensure that the material of your survival bag is made of thick material of high quality. It should not tear easily. Some bags are even cut-proof and protect you against theft in crowded areas.

Shoulder and chest straps
Don't underestimate the importance of good shoulder straps. Ask your outdoor shop if you can try the bag with some weight on it first. This will give you an idea of how the bag sits and whether it's comfortable. The bag should also have good chest straps to properly secure the bag to your body.

Bright colors
You don't necessarily need to buy a bright yellow survival backpack, but try and select one that is easy to spot. In case of emergency, you will want to be spotted easily. Blending in through camouflage colors is not something you want.

Pockets
The right bug out bag will have multiple pockets, sections and drink compartments. The bag should maximise space and convenience. There's nothing worse than having pockets in awkward places that you can't get to easily. Particularly, pay attention to how many drinking compartments are available and where they are located. You want to be able to drink easily and often, rather than having to stop and take the bag off your back first.

Size
Don't just buy the biggest backpack you see, thinking that it reflects good value. Think about the contents of your bug out bag (link here) first. What are you taking with you in case of an emergency? You want to be able to easily carry the contents of your bag. Give yourself a bit of extra space by selecting a slightly bigger bag, just in case. Don't overdo it! Think about getting a bag that has a small adjustable compartment, so that you can expand it if you need.

Frame and load distribution
Not only do you want to get the bag that is just right for the amount of items you will be carrying, you will also want to pick one that will let you do this comfortably for your body type. Based on your packing list, think about where everything will fit in the bag. The weight should be balanced so that the bag doesn't place unnecessary strain on your back. There are many survival backpacks that are made to be 'breathable'; in other words, there's a small space between the bag and your back that will allow perspiration to escape. Added comforts such as these can make a big difference.

Waterproof
Any decent survival backpack is waterproof. Remember that in an emergency situation you might find yourself in any weather situation.

This list covers the main considerations you should keep in mind when selecting a survival backpack. Make sure you go over your personal needs carefully; every situation is different, there is no 'one-size-fits-all' when it comes to the right backpack!
